Build your own DSE Maths revision tool with AI

In one 3-hour workshop, students use free Gemini to build a revision tool they can use the same evening: practice questions, hints, full working, an exam mode and a mistake log. Along the way they learn the part most AI users skip — checking whether the AI is right.

The 90-second test

The same request, given to free Gemini twice.

Tool features built with free Gemini; the interface was polished by Per Sir. Gemini's output varies with time and wording — the video shows a test run on 22 October 2026.

Same request, two results

Run 1: Gemini on its own

Asked for ten DSE-style questions, it produced seven. Three of the five multiple-choice answers were wrong. The page looked finished, which is exactly why the mistakes were easy to miss.

Run 2: with a checked question bank

Same request, plus Per Sir's question bank and a short set of working rules. It produced 26 questions, every answer correct, with hints, an exam mode and a mistake log.

The problem was never that AI can't do it. It's whether we know how to tell it what to do — and how to check what comes back. That is what the workshop teaches.

What happens in the three hours

  1. Plan. Pick one DSE topic and decide what your tool must do.
  2. Run 1. Ask Gemini on its own, then test what it builds.
  3. Spot the AI mistake. Find where Run 1 went wrong, and why.
  4. Run 2. Build again with the checked question bank and working rules.
  5. Improve. Add one feature at a time and test each one before the next.
  6. Show. Explain your tool in one minute, including one mistake you caught.

What your child leaves with

  • A revision tool that works

For one DSE Maths topic, ready to use that evening.

  • Revision, done along the way

Building and testing the tool means working through the topic question by question.

  • A habit worth more than the tool

Plan, test, check. AI makes confident mistakes; they learn to catch them.

  • A real project to talk about

Something they built themselves, and an AI mistake they found, for a university application or interview.

Topics to choose from

Each topic has its own question bank, written and checked by Per Sir. The questions are original, modelled on the style of the DSE papers.

  • Polynomials (remainder and factor theorems, HCF and LCM)
  • Equations (quadratic and simultaneous)
  • Functions and graphs of quadratic functions
  • More about graphs of functions
  • Exponential and logarithmic functions
  • Equations of straight lines

Want to practise first? The free question bank has full practice papers with worked solutions.

Questions parents ask

Does my child need to know how to code?

No. Students describe what they want in plain words and learn to direct the AI. The skill is planning and checking, not typing code.

Why free Gemini?

It costs nothing, it is available to students in Hong Kong aged 13 and over, and students can keep using it at home after the workshop.

Does the AI write the Maths questions?

No. That is the point of Run 1. The questions come from Per Sir's checked question bank; the AI builds the tool around them, and students check the result.

Why only Maths?

A revision tool is only useful if its answers are right. Maths is the subject where Per Sir can check every answer himself.

What comes after the workshop?

Students who want to go further can continue into longer, project-based AI courses. Ask on WhatsApp and Per Sir will explain the options.
