Per Sir, founder of Math and AI Academy

A graduate of the University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Per Sir has spent over twenty years teaching mathematics to secondary students across Hong Kong's leading schools.

He works with students from Chinese International School, ESF schools, Diocesan Boys' School, Diocesan Girls' School, Po Leung Kuk Choi Kai Yau School, Wah Yan College (Hong Kong), St. Joseph's College, Pui Ching Middle School, Logos Academy and G.T. (Ellen Yeung) College — across the IB, IGCSE and HKDSE curricula.

Most of his students achieve a 6 or 7 in IB Mathematics. Several have scored between 43 and 45 points overall, going on to read Economics at UCLA, Medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Philosophy, Politics and Economics at the University of Oxford.

His approach comes from engineering: understand the structure, and the answer follows. Students are not asked to memorise formulas — they are taught to see why a method works, so they can rebuild it under exam pressure. It is the same thinking that now shapes how he teaches AI: not as a set of tools to be memorised, but as a way of solving real problems.

Why mathematics and AI together

They are not two subjects that happen to share a tutor. Mathematics is the training in structured thinking — take something large and unclear, break it down, and work through it without losing the thread. AI is the most useful place that skill currently goes.

Students who can only follow instructions get very little out of AI tools. Students who can frame a problem get an enormous amount. The mathematics is what makes the second kind of student.
